Our mission is to spread awareness and opposition to our surrounding communities about the misogynistic legislature being proposed in the United States government, as well as provide a venue for the pro-choice citizens of Tampa to express themselves.

This blog will feature news on upcoming protests, events, and updates on pro-choice and anti-choice bills in Congress.

Walk for Choice Tampa

Open Fire: Anti abortion ad provokes lawsuit

Open Fire: Anti abortion ad provokes lawsuit:
dreamer-doll-recovery:

Across the country, Roe v. Wade is becoming more and more irrelevant as the states implement tighter restrictions on abortion access.

When will it end?

Conservatives will not relent until abortion is outlawed entirely.

The House passed six anti-abortion measures Wednesday mostly on party-line votes, with the Republicans approving. Here are the bills and the votes.

Ultrasound: Would require women to have an ultrasound and hear a description of the fetus before getting an abortion. Would allow women to refuse to review the ultrasound if they do so in writing.

HB 1127, sponsored by eight Republican representatives, passed 81-37.

SB 1744, filed by Sen. Ronda Storms, R-Valrico, set for Budget Committee vote Thursday .

Abortion clinics: Would prohibit abortion clinics from doing third trimester abortions. Also would create new requirements for abortion clinics, including that any opened after Oct. 1 be wholly owned and operated by a doctors, and for doctors providing abortions, including that they get annual ethics training. Also would require that abortion providers report to state health officials after every abortion rather than the current monthly reporting.

HB 1397, sponsored by 18 Republican representatives, passed 79-36.

SB 1748, filed by Sen. Anitere Flores, ready for vote by full Senate.

Parental consent: Would change current parental notification laws to make it more difficult for minors to obtain court waivers allowing them to get abortions without their parents’ consent. Gives judges less leeway when determining a minor’s maturity to make a decision about abortion. Requires the girl to go to court in the circuit where she lives instead of within the larger appellate district. Gives judges three business days instead of 48 hours to consider the cases.

HB 1247, filed by 18 Republican representatives, passed 82-35.

SB 1770, filed by Sen. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, set for Budget Committee vote Thursday .

Public funding: Would put a question on the November 2012 ballot asking voters whether the Florida constitution should be amended to ban public funding for abortions and health-benefits coverage for abortions. Allows public funding for rape, incest and to protect the mother’s life, and would not apply to expenditures required by federal law. Also specifies that the Florida constitution may not be interpreted to create broader rights to an abortion than those in the U.S. Constitution, which would effectively weaken the right to privacy now contained in Florida’s constitution. Needs 60 percent of vote in each chamber to go on ballot and 60 percent of public vote to pass.

HJR 1179, filed by Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, passed 82-35.

SJR 1538, filed by Flores, preliminarily approved by Senate.

License plates: Would channel money from “Choose Life” license plate sales to the nonprofit Choose Life Inc. to give to agencies that assist women placing their children for adoption. Also would allow 20 percent of tag sales to be spent on administration and advertising by Choose Life Inc. Current law sends money to the counties where the tags were sold and requires 100 percent of it to be used to support agencies counseling or helping women who choose adoption. New law, like current one, prohibits any money going to any agency having any involvement with abortion, including counseling women that it is an option.

HB 501, filed by Baxley, passed 82-35.

SB 196, filed by Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, ready for vote in Senate.

Abortion insurance: Would bar insurance policies purchased in whole or in part through insurance exchanges created by the federal health-care act from providing abortion coverage. Would bar businesses receiving tax credits for providing health insurance for their employees from offering policies that cover abortion.

HB 97, filed by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach, passed 80-37.

SB 1414, filed by Sen. Steve Wise, R-Jacksonville, preliminarily approved by Senate.

Did you know you can stump anti-abortionists with one simple question?

Just ask them this:

If abortion was illegal, what should be done with the women who have illegal abortions?

Now watch their faces as the cognitive dissonance sets in. They believe abortion to be murder. Murder deserves severe punishment. Thus, women who have illegal abortions should receive severe punishment — like life in prison or the death penalty. That’s the logical conclusion.

But they can’t accept this conclusion. They know it’s absurd and unfair — which means they know abortion is not really murder.

src: http://unreasonablefaith.com/2009/01/21/how-to-stump-anti-abortionists-with-one-question/

Read this whole thing.

Utah prosecutors and conservative politicians are determined to lock up the young woman known in court filings as J.M.S. for the crime of trying to end her pregnancy. Her grim journey through the legal system began in 2009, when she was 17 and pregnant by a convicted felon named Brandon Gale, who is currently facing charges of using her and another underage girl to make pornography. J.M.S. lived in a house without electricity or running water in a remote part of Utah. Even if she could have obtained the required parental consent and scraped together money for an abortion and a couple of nights in a hotel to comply with Utah’s twenty-four-hour waiting period, simply getting to the nearest clinic posed an enormous challenge. Salt Lake City is more than a three-hour drive from her town, twice that in bad weather, when snow makes the mountain passes treacherous. There is no public transportation, and she didn’t have a driver’s license.

And so, according to prosecutors, in May 2009, in her third trimester and desperate, J.M.S. paid a stranger $150 to beat her in the hope of inducing a miscarriage. The assault failed to end her pregnancy, but that didn’t stop police from charging her with criminal solicitation of murder. The juvenile court judge who heard her case, however, tossed it out on the grounds that her actions were legal under the state’s definition of abortion.

Local abortion opponents were outraged that J.M.S. had been freed. “It revealed an extreme weakness in the law, that a pregnant woman could do anything she wanted to do—it did not matter how grotesque or brutal—all the way up until the date of birth to kill her unborn child,” said Carl Wimmer, a state representative. He led a successful campaign to amend Utah’s abortion law so that as of last year, women who end their pregnancies outside the medical system can be prosecuted as killers. “We will be the only state in the nation that will do what we’re attempting to do here: hold a woman accountable for killing her unborn child,” Wimmer told the Salt Lake Tribune.

He’s wrong. In recent years, women in several states have faced arrest and imprisonment for the crime of ending their pregnancies, or merely attempting to do so. For decades now, feminists have warned about a post–Roe v. Wade world in which women are locked up for having abortions. Antiabortion activists dismiss such fears as propaganda. “The pro-life position has always been that women are victimized by abortion,” says the Priests for Life website, which has a page of sample letters to the editor meant to refute claims that abortion bans could lead to women being prosecuted. “In fact, we have repeatedly rejected the suggestion that women should be put in jail, much less executed.” But as abortion rights weaken and fetuses are endowed with a separate legal identity, women are being put in jail.

I urge any anti-choicer who claims to have reverence for women and their bodies to read this and think about what they stand for.

scyntillations:

This is not a fucking 8-week abortion. Look, that thing appears to be seriously developed (but tiny). If the “child” really develops that quickly, don’t you think pregnancy would take a lot less long?

Dearest followers, could you please:

1) Enter “Alpha Center Fort Collins” into Google

2) Click the link that reads “Deceptive Crisis Pregnancy Centers in our Schools”

3) Spread the word so that this CPC gets completely Santorum’d. (Click the first link on Google for that one!)

(Question made rebloggable by request from awhisperofsky)

If anyone has any other CPC’s they want Google-bombed, submit them!

Done!

The blog CPC Watch posts information on the deceptive tactics of pro-life Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Their testimonials page has many disturbing examples of…

Disturbing harrassment:

…Seven months later, I got a card in the mail. It said, “Congratulations on Your New Baby!” but it was splattered with red paint or ink. Every year after that, I’d get a Happy Birthday card made for children, except they’re all splattered with red paint. We couldn’t get them to stop legally because there was no proof the Crisis Center was sending them. I finally stopped receiving the cards when I moved out of the state and didn’t leave behind a forwarding address….

Misinformation:

…When I got there, a woman in a white lab coat told me there was a 48 hour waiting period on PlanB. This didn’t seem right to me but I was confused and disparate so I went along with it. I came back two days later and was told that it was too late to take PlanB. They said I might already be pregnant and PlanB could harm the baby….

This is disturbing because it’s actually an attempt at getting a woman pregnant. Plan B (the morning after pill) works as a stronger dose of the birth control pill and can be taken after having unprotected sex. The sooner it is taken, the more effective it is at preventing pregnancy.

Using the “fathers rights” argument about a rapist:

I reluctantly explained that I had not wanted to have sex but that it was forced upon me by the father of my eighth month old son (I completely broke down since this was the first time that I had said it aloud). I was afraid they would want me to report the rape and I was scared for my life at that point and not planning on going to the authorities. But they didn’t even mention it; of course, I was thankful at the time. When my test came back positive and I asked to schedule an abortion they asked me, “What about the father… doesn’t he have a say? This baby is his too.” I felt so sick. I couldn’t believe they would say that… the father? The father was a rapist.

This is something a lot of pro-lifers say that they believe is an exception to the idea that the father should have a say.

There are a lot more.

I’ve just made a new blog featuring the ridiculous measures of anti-choice propaganda. I really like the idea; maybe you can pimp us out a bit? Not trying to be a nag. Keep being a badass.
